The Mythology of Scorpio, Leo, and Cancer: Cosmic Tales of Constellations
When it comes to the mythology surrounding Scorpio, the narrative is rich and diverse, intertwining with the legendary figure of Orion, the Hunter. In various accounts, Scorpio emerges as an assassin sent by Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, tasked with eliminating Orion for reasons that differ depending on the tale. Some suggest Artemis acted out of rage for her defeat at his hands; others claim she sought to protect the bull of Taurus. In some versions, it’s Orion’s boastfulness about his hunting prowess that provokes Artemis, who believed in hunting solely for sustenance. Yet another story depicts Scorpio as a punishment for Orion's relentless pursuit of the Pleiades, the seven sisters.

Turning our gaze to Leo and Cancer, both constellations owe their origins—and tragic fates—to the formidable hero Hercules. His first significant challenge was to slay the Nemean Lion, a monstrous creature with skin so impenetrable that no weapon could pierce it. Hercules ultimately resorted to brute strength, wrestling the lion to the ground and strangling it with his bare hands.
The skin of this ferocious beast became a vital asset for Hercules as he faced his next daunting task: the Lernean Hydra. This multi-headed dragon posed a unique challenge; for each head severed, two would regenerate in its place. The lion's skin provided him with essential protection against the Hydra's onslaught as he devised a strategy to defeat it.
Yet, Hercules' challenges didn’t end there. Hera, the wife of Zeus, harbored a deep resentment towards Hercules and sought his demise. She dispatched a crab to distract him during the fierce battle with the Hydra. Unfortunately for the crab, Hercules’ focus was unyielding, and he swiftly crushed it underfoot. In a final act of tribute, Hera immortalized the crab in the night sky, ensuring its sacrifice would never be forgotten.
